'The Secret History of the Reptilians'

The Reptilians are one of the races of visiting alien pervasive within the UFO culture, along with Greys and Nordics. This book covers a lot of that lore, and looks in detail at the essential Serpent mythology in religion. Where some books presenting this kind of overview might settle on the concept that the modern Reptilians are simply an extension of deeper undercurrent of mythology lying at the heart of our ancient cultural heritage, Scott Alan Roberts leaves the door open for a chink of UFO light to peek through the darkness. He also follows along the many threads of Serpent lineage that pervade another niche of alternative knowledge authorship - that of Bloodlines.
Along the way, there is much posturing by the author. The contentious way he portrays fundamentalists of all hues (religious, scientific, alternative) risks rubbing a lot of his potential readership up the wrong way. He describes himself as occupying the middle ground: a thinking man trained in Bible classes and seminaries who has stepped 'out of the box' to examine religion with fresh eyes, yet highly critical of atheistic fundamentalism, secular academia, and whacky conspiracy theorists too. Such positioning can promote reasonable and moderate debate, but the author's tone is more antagonistic, reflecting better the convulsive mood of Internet forums than a literary monologue, as demonstrated by this colourful and entertaining blast:
"Hardcore atheists are to religious believers what an office-bound, short-sleeved, horn-rimmed-spectacle-wearing, white shirt, and tied accountant is to the free styling, caution-to-the-wind, dreadlocked, barefooted, multi-colored-paint-smeared, loft-dwelling artist." (p88)
It's the sort of score-settling one might expect to read in an autobiography. I strongly suspect that much of the research and received opinion in the book has been derived from the Internet. I will shortly demonstrate that clearly in the case of the author's scorching and erroneous critique of the work of the late Zecharia Sitchin. Is that a problem in itself - that shift away from books and journals to online content as research material for books? Not necessarily, as long as one checks back to the original sources as well, especially when levelling criticism.
As it happens, the author offers a précis of online content about Reptilians that in many ways is excellent (pp135-7). But be wary: The Internet causes content to evolve, meaning that a writer's work can become distorted by the stream of commentary it is subject to online. In the case of Sitchin, his work has been tied to the Reptilian Annunaki (sic) in this book, when Sitchin's actual writings never described the Anunnaki as Reptilian at all (note the correct spelling of Anunnaki here. This is so common an error that I often make an immediate judgement on Sitchinite commentary based upon the spelling or misspelling of Anunnaki). This erroneous link is alluded to many times in the book, but spelt out in black and white here:
"In recent years I have read more accounts of the Reptilians on the Internet that are precise, repetitive, word-for-word copies of theories presented by Zechariah (sic) Sitchin, David Icke, and others of like mind, whom I would refer to as founders of the contemporary thinking on the Reptilian Theory, that I believe there are few original thoughts or unique research out there." (p139)
On the contrary, Mr Roberts. Sure, many commentators on the Net have come to believe Sitchin meant this, but that's not the same as what he actually wrote. It's a huge game of Chinese Whispers online, and the author has tuned into the wrong end of the chatosphere when doing his research. When you take apart someone's life's work like this book does, then it's important to actually read it first, right? The late Philip Coppens, who wrote the foreword to this book, managed to deftly avoid this trap (whilst also managing the correct spelling of Sitchin's first name, although not Anunnaki) by writing:
"[Rene Andrew] Boulay continued the work of American author Zecharia Sitchin, who had proposed that in the distant past, we were visited by beings from a 12th planet...who were the founders of most civilizations, but specifically that of Ancient Sumer. Whereas Sitchin had left the nature of these beings blank, Boulay claimed that these beings were reptilian." (p11)
If Scott Alan Roberts had paid more attention to the foreword of his own book, then he would have realised that he was wrong to link Sitchin so closely to the Reptilian Theory. Sitchin's Anunnaki are very much like humans; enough to allegedly allow natural interbreeding (if one entertains his interpretations of what the ancient Mesopotamian myths meant). There are quite reasonable critiques of Sitchin's work reproduced in this book, I should add. It's just that they don't apply to Reptilians.
The main thrust of 'The Secret History of the Reptilians' is a reinterpretation of Biblical texts as the Serpent Seed Doctrine, which the author seems pretty confident about:
"The Serpent Seed Doctrine should rightfully have the word Doctrine removed from the title, for it is nothing more than a statement of fact as substantiated within the textual passage where we find the interaction between the Serpent, Nachash, and Eve, the wife of Adam. Moreover, the Reptilian race that interacts with humanity is beginning to look more and more as if it is less a host of alien invaders, but rather a linkage, both physically and metaphysically, to the bloodline of the Serpent." (p155)
The way such arguments work is to look closely at the interpretation of key words in ancient texts. There's a certain amount of extrapolation involved, with words taken to their extreme meaning to fit editorial context. This is a methodology that the author is savvy enough to recognise in the hands of writers like Sitchin, and generations of scriptural editors/translators who worked over ancient texts as they slowly evolved from one transliteration to the next.
"In the vaguely historical, mostly pseudo-anthropological works of Sitchin, the Annunaki (sic) are space travelers who descended in linguistically forced "firey (sic) rockets"." (p173)
Mr Roberts' own hypotheses run the same risks, of course, although my own knowledge of philology is not adequate enough to present a cogent analysis of his intriguing ideas. But it seems to me that he leans into the key words in much the same way.
He brightens when describing the work of Laurence Gardner; especially the more obscure writings about the Merovingian bloodlines (pp173-4). To amass further support, Mr Roberts also reviews some of the beliefs of various obscure Christian sects, many apocryphal texts, as well as the late 19th Century esoteric literature apparently so beloved of the Nazis.
In the end, this eloquent and actually quite finely considered book fails to reach a strong conclusion. Perhaps that is wise, in keeping with the author's propensity for doubt. The narrative seems aimed at people of faith whom themselves entertain doubts, much like the author in his youth perhaps. The winding road he has mapped out in this book suffers from a large number of pot-holes (beyond the cavernous own-goal previously discussed) in the form of proper name typos: Hilter for Hitler; Karl Jung; Elil for Enlil; YWHW randomly interspersed with YHWH, Sumar for Sumer, Cletic for Celtic, and so on. My favourite typo was the delightfully nefarious 'encoded massages on the tombstone' (p185), although "...and - viola! - we have religion" (p122) came a very close second. These kinds of sloppy errors make it difficult to take his arguments as seriously as they may actually deserve.
The closing section of the book takes on David Icke - a much bigger fish these days than the late, softly-spoken Zecharia Sitchin. I will leave it to Icke's fans (Ickites?) to pick apart that particular nest of vipers.
